What Happens After You Call 911 and Tolono FPD responds?
When you call 911, it’s often due to a sudden emergency that requires immediate assistance. You may need the help of police, medical services, or the fire department. If you live in an area served by a Tolono Fire Protection District, you might wonder what happens after your call is made. Here’s a look at the process and what you can expect.
1. The Initial Call
When you dial 911, your call is routed to a public safety answering point (PSAP), where a trained dispatcher will answer. The dispatcher will ask for crucial information, such as the nature of the emergency, your location, and any specific details that can help responders. In Champaign County, this PSAP is referred to as METCAD.
2. Dispatching the Volunteer Fire Department
Once the dispatcher has the necessary information, they will alert the appropriate emergency services. If your emergency requires the fire department, the dispatcher will activate the local volunteer fire department’s alert system. Tolono FPD members carry a pager that alerts when they are needed. Many members also use a smartphone app that will alert them in places where the pager may not. This app is also used to signal other members who are responding.
3. Volunteers Respond
Volunteer firefighters typically have regular jobs and lives but are always on call to respond to emergencies. Upon receiving the alert, they will quickly make their way to the fire station. This response time can vary based on the time of day, weather conditions, and the volunteers’ proximity to the station. Tolono FPD volunteers typically reach the station in 5 minutes for EMS calls, and 6 minutes for fires and rescues.
4. Preparing the Equipment
Once at the station, the volunteer firefighters will gear up and prepare the necessary equipment. They will check their gear, load into the fire truck, and head out to the scene of the emergency as quickly and safely as possible.
5. Arrival at the Scene
Upon arrival, the volunteers will assess the situation and begin their response. If it’s a fire, they will work to extinguish it and prevent it from spreading. If it’s a medical emergency, many of our members are also trained as EMRs, EMTs, or paramedics and can provide critical care until an ambulance arrives. For other emergencies, such as car accidents or hazardous material incidents, they will take appropriate actions to secure the scene and assist those in need. Tolono FPD generally arrives on scene to EMS calls within 8 minutes, 11 minutes for a fire, and 15 minutes for a vehicle accident/rescue. Understand that many of our accident/rescues are on I-57, which contributes to arrival times.
6. Coordinating with Other Services
In many emergencies, multiple agencies may be involved. Volunteer firefighters will often work alongside police, medical personnel, and other specialized teams. Coordination is crucial to ensure a comprehensive and effective response to the emergency.
7. Follow-Up and Recovery
After the immediate danger is addressed, the volunteer firefighters may assist with clean-up, provide support to affected individuals, and ensure the area is safe. They might also conduct a debriefing session to review the response and identify any areas for improvement.
8. Returning to Normalcy
Once the situation is under control, the volunteers will return to the station, clean and restock their equipment, and prepare for the next call. This readiness is a vital part of their role, ensuring they are always prepared to respond when needed.
The Importance of Volunteer Fire Departments
Volunteer fire departments play a crucial role in many communities, especially in rural and small-town areas. They provide essential services that might otherwise be unavailable or delayed due to the lack of a paid, full-time fire department. The dedication and commitment of volunteer firefighters ensure that communities remain safe and protected in times of crisis.
